On Friday night, we went to a little get together with some people from the media team at our church. We each brought some sort of side dish to the gathering. One couple brought a party staple - "Rotel."
When we first moved to Mississippi, "Rotel" was quite the anomaly. The first time we were at a party and someone said, "You made Rotel!" the concept was lost on us. We thought that someone had dumped a can of Rotel in that crock pot and that everyone was excited about it. Alas, in Mississippi "Rotel" is what we formerly knew as "Queso."
Could you imagine going to a restaurant outside of the South and ordering "Rotel"??? They would probably look at you really funny and bring you an aluminum can of tomatoes and chiles.
We have finally adapted to the point that we aren't puzzled every time someone says that they are bringing "Rotel" to a party - but it still makes us giggle a little... and probably always will. :)

i'm laughing outloud! this is funny.... see, i call "queso" the white cheese dip that you get at mexican restaurants. "rotel" is made with orange cheesy velveeta with the can of 'rotel'! gotta love the regional talk... .... i bet you and goodie LOVE it when we say, "i'm fixin' to go to the grocery store"
Wow... I learned something new today. See, in Texas, we call almost any dip with melted cheese "Queso." I didn't know that there were different names for different types here in MS.

And actually "fixin to" is a Texas staple - along with "y'all." However, the other Mississippi phrase that gets us every time is "might could." :) "We might could go to the game this weekend" or "We might could go huntin' but we'll have to see how the weather cooperates." Our PhD educated pastor uses the phrase "might could" almost every Sunday in his sermon. Our high school English teacher friend didn't realize that "might could" was improper grammar until we pointed it out. LOL!
Regional sayings are definitely fun!
