The Goodrums

A few weeks ago, Jennifer "kidnapped" me from work and drove me blindfolded all over the metro area on our way to dinner at The Boulder Broker Inn to celebrate the five year anniversary of our engagement. She actually drove circles around the parking lot before leaving my office just so I didn't know where we were going. Anyway, given a significant amount of time blindfolded in a car (I wonder what the other drivers were thinking), I naturally had time to think. And talk. For some reason we were discussing the culture of Denver and how to describe the somewhat odd and sometimes seemingly opposite collection of people who live here. As we discussed, a certain oxymoron came to mind as a good way to describe Denver. Granolaburbia. The juxtaposition of what is lovingly or unlovingly referred to as suburbia and the granola who occupy nearly every Subaru in town is kind of summed up in this term. It's interesting at times how well these two live together here; most people that would be labeled "granola" are against just about everything that is suburban. Suburbia is kind of intended to weed out the granola. But somehow it works. Like RVs and tents at the same campground.
