Merry Christmas, as we continue this review of all things 2012!
So, June 2012 continued the work sprint that was May. This work sprint would continue long past June. Somewhere around October, we realized we had lined up in the wrong race because it wasn’t over yet. We may be close to the finish line now, but it may be that we just gave up and started walking.
Jennifer’s annual work conference took place in June. This conference usually involved visiting spectacular CO locations like Vail, Crested Butte, Aspen-Snowmass, etc. and hanging out with a bunch of dentists for a long weekend. This year the conference was in Fort Collins. The benefit of Fort Collins was that the conference was closer than the locations previously listed; the downside being Fort Collins is not particular known to be as spectacular a destination (though Jennifer attests turned out to be surprisingly fun).
Immediately prior to this conference came the storm (video excerpt below - yes that is hail, not snow). Basically, we had hail for about 3 ½ hours that increased in size as the storm went on. The hail was at least quarter sized for at least two of the 3 ½ hours. We were thankful the windows didn’t break and for once that Stewie was not outside to be pummeled. The U-Haul van for Jennifer’s work toughed the storm out like a champ. I think all of south metro Denver got new roofs this year as a result of the storm. Lots of new paint too. They are still roofing and painting in our neighborhood six months later.
I did get the chance to put an epoxy coating on the garage floor in June in preparation for future work on the Jeep. I would advise against doing this as a single person task; much easier if done with two people.
I also started spending time in
Columbia, SC.
Side Note: If you travel to Columbia, SC it is fun to just tell people you are going to Columbia. This is similar to referring to Florence, CO as Florence.

We also bought a car in June. I basically blame Eddie and Teri Coates for that. We had done lots of test drives and narrowed down to the 2013 Subaru Impreza (pending test drive), Mazda3 hatchback, and Volkswagen Golf TDI (I tried for the GTI). Well, Subaru neutered and ruined the manual transmission Impreza in 2013, so after an anemic and disappointing test drive we were down to the Mazda and the VW. The Germans make good cars. The Japanese make good cars. The Germans make far more expensive cars than the Japanese. Mazda won. Eddie and Teri came to visit and we had talked about having test driven all these cars and settled on the Mazda and Eddie said to me “we’ll do whatever y’all want. If you want to shop for a car or need to handle that, don’t let us stop you.” I told Eddie it was not big deal and would wait and that we would hang out with them. I was wrong and Jennifer capitalized on an ad from the Springs to secure a really good deal on a 2012 Dolphin Grey Mazda3 5 door (picture above). The car had 13 miles on it when we showed up and caused a mild squabble amongst two car salesmen. Score for us. So, the men drove the new car home and managed to activate Jennifer’s cell phone in the other car while trying to work the Bluetooth system in the Mazda. We celebrated prematurely by having amazing French food at the
crazy good French bakery by our house.
